Keynote speaker Lt. Governor Becky Skillman was inspiring and encouraging, while NGCOA CEO Mike Hughes pointed to progress in golf legislation and the importance of being a sharp operator when making decisions on inventory marketing and management. From legal advice, examples of successful marketing programs, and leadership skills, to banking information and a review of the year's turf challenges, this year's conference covered a full spectrum of information. Click here for PGA Professional Jan Tellstrom's presentation on Leadership. Contact the INGCOA office for copies of Jeff Abrams look at owner/operator challenges from a legal perspective.
Conference Highlights
Steve Ferguson, CEO of Cook Group, which owns French Lick Resort, joined guests for a fantastic dinner Wednesday evening. The Industry Partner Tradeshow packed an adjacent conference room on Thursday and during a mid-morning break INGCOA members had an opportunity to visit one-on-one with exhibitors. The Association Business Meeting followed Thursday's lunch confirming the 2012 slate of officers. INGCOA officers for 2012, serving a two-year term, are: President Sam Taylor of StonyCreek Golf Club in Noblesville, Vice President Trevor Crafton of Cozy Acres Golf Complex in Madison, Secretary Ron West of RH West Management, and Treasurer Cathy Moritz of Shady Hills Golf Club in Marion. Following the business meeting, Tom Kern of Valle Vista Golf Course was awarded the inaugural Outstanding Contributor Award for his contribution to the state chapter, since its inception, and The Pete Dye Course at French Lick was named 2012 Indiana Course of the Year. See full Course of the Year story below.
Thanks to our hosts Dave Harner and Jan Tellstrom and all the staff at French Lick Resort for their outstanding hospitality.
| Sam Taylor Assumes INGCOA Presidency |
 |
Sam Taylor, owner of Stony Creek Golf Course in Noblesville, assumed responsibilities as President of the Indiana Golf Couse Owners Association following elections at the 2011 Business Conference Annual Business Meeting. Taylor has served the Association as secretary for two years and then vice president for two years.Taylor has been an NGCOA member since 1999 when he saved $1,950 on a new fleet of 78 Yamaha golf carts as part of an NGCOA Buyer Network program. He loves Listserv, but mostly the interaction with other owners through INGCOA's programs and events. "I think the property tax legislation has been very successful in helping owners save substantial money, but more importantly, giving a more equitable taxing of golf courses in Indiana." Taylor believes, "There is more work to be done on property taxes. Another issue is third party tee time resellers. We need to keep our price integrity as best we can."

Taylor is a third generation golf course operator. His mother's father, J.D. Rees, started Willow Brook Golf Club in 1930. Four years later he built a nine hole course, replacing the driving range. Taylor's mother, Margaret, with her sister and brother, ran Willow Brook after their father's death until 1959 when Taylor's parents bought 91 acres of land in Castleton and developed a driving range and a putt-putt course followed by construction of 18 holes in 1967. Taylor helped to design and build the course with his dad Joe.
Taylor graduated from Purdue University in 1969 with an Agronomy degree, and became superintendent at the family course until more property was purchased in 1986 in Noblesville, and StonyCreek was born. Taylor built and designed StonyCreek Golf Club, with the help of family and friends, and has been the sole operator of StonyCreek since 1999. Taylor says, "I believe we have benefited in being a viable business, using INGCOA and NGCOA resources. In that vein, I hope I can help fellow owners survive and thrive in the future."
Taylor and his wife Rosie have one daughter, Megan, who's husband Bill VanValer is now superintendent at StonyCreek. Taylor resides in McCordsville, about eight miles south of StonyCreek.

NGCOA Conference Promises More Education Sessions
|
The 2012 NGCOA Annual Conference in Las Vegas in February promises to deliver more educational sessions than ever before. With a full day of education on Tuesday, and sessions on Friday, along with all the educational opportunities at Angel Park Golf Course on Monday, attendees will find more fresh ideas and profit strategies than at recent conferences.
Linda Rogers, Incoming NGCOA President, spoke about the NGCOA Conference recently, "I hope INGCOA members will join me in Las Vegas for the 2012 NGCOA conference. I have attended the conference for nearly 20 years and always look forward to learning the latest in industry trends and innovative ideas to help keep our business in front. Every year, we have been able to gather ideas from operators across the country, and then implement them at our course. The additional revenue has more than paid for the cost to attend the conference. I also really enjoy the chance to visit with longtime friends, and make new ones. After all, we're all in this together."
Plan to join your Indiana colleagues in Las Vegas and take home all you need to start strategizing for a great 2012 golf season. See all the highlights of this year's NGCOA Annual Conference and the Golf Industry Show details at: www.ngcoa.org/ac2012/.
